The Macular Disease Foundation Australia (MDFA) and International Federation on Ageing (IFA) co-hosted the inaugural Global Ageing & Vision Advocacy Summit, with leading international advocates from 12 countries in Barcelona, Spain, on 17–18 April 2013.

Chief Executive Officer of the Macular Disease Foundation Australia, Ms Julie Heraghty, and other leading key advocates presented their work on ageing and vision, exploring linkages and commonalities.

Key presenters at the Summit included:

• Dr Alan Cruess, Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Dalhousie University, Canada
• Dr Jacob Kumaresan, Executive Director of the World Health Organisation Office at the United Nations in New York, USA
• Professor Ian Philp, Medical Director at the South Warewickshire NHS Foundation Trust, UK
• Dr Michael Tiet Nielsen, Chief Officer of Advocacy, Strategy and Innovation at DaneAge Association, Denmark

The Summit provided a platform through learning and knowledge exchange to build the capability and capacity of the ageing and vision sectors to effectively advocate and represent the interests of citizens at risk of vision impairment.
